The Flashlube team have been asked questions about some of lower grade diesel fuel coming and more important the impact added sulphur will have on engines
As they are not experts on sulphur, they have done some research and went back into the archives and would like to relay their findings and understanding and hopefully will assist to answer customer questions if they arise.
A natural component of crude oil is a Sulphur and previously was found in very high doses in diesel fuel.
The BENEFITS of sulphur in diesel was that it had a lubricity factor and in the older diesels, Bedfords, Massey Ferguson engines, “MECHANICAL INJECTORS & PUMPS” it acted as a very mild but effective lubricant factor on these older engines.
The NEGATIVES of sulphur in Diesel was that sulphur delivered higher air pollution and emissions, produced sulphur dioxide (a pungent-smelling toxic gas, colour less, highly reactive), produced fine particular matter in the air, “Which is major factor in respiratory irritation and illnesses”, contributed to acid rain, caused combustion engine to build severe corrosion (RUST) issue in the combustion chambers, fuel lines, exhaust systems and leaving the rust stain on the concrete when engines was on idle.
In the year 2006, Sulphur had a massive reduction in Diesel fuel and the introduction of Ultra-low Diesel Fuel was developed.
Forward to 2026?!?!?
These refined and newer, better operating electronically controlled engines (Common Rail Diesel Engine), even though the sulphur would add a lubrication film, the carefully tuned emission controlled and fuel-efficient designs would not suit well and would be a mechanics dream if we all use high Sulphur diesel fuel.
- Effects: The build-up of the corrosion (RUST) would certainly be a nightmare and cause many engine components’ issues in short and long term, with clogs & damaged injectors, fuel pump failure, effects on emissions, ECU control modules, (DPF/SCR) systems and accelerated corrosive wear on cylinder walls.
Preventative action or Preventative maintenance. How can we protect and reduce the outcomes?
Adding a fuel additive with the following features will certainly be a factor to reducing the damaging effect sulphur may have on your vehicle, while adding a layer of protection to your engine and fuel components.
Benefits of the Flashlube Diesel Conditioner:
Cleans, Lubricates, Protects complete Fuel Systems,
- Upper Cylinder Head,
- Injector body & nozzles,
- Piston & Rings,
- Diesel pump,
- Reduces Diesel smoke,
- Reduces harmful emissions,
- Breaks down soot & carbon build up,
- Maintains cleaner EGR, DPF & Sensors,
- Increases fuel economy,
- Protects against Corrosion,
The Diesel Water Separator Filter’s primary function is to prevent water from entering into the engine via the fuel system and causing engine damage. Designed and manufactured using a chemically treated paper media, it filters, repels and separates up to 95% of water accumulated in Diesel fuel and collects it into an easy visual inspection draining bowl.
Benefits:
- Prevents water and dirt contamination in the fuel system,
- Costly damage to Injectors and injector rail,
- Fuel pumps,
- Filters,
- Fuel tank corrosion,
- Insure the best protection for your Common Rail Diesel Fuel system.
